Research Agenda to Address Early Mortality

Presentation Description: A new paradigm led by people with lived experience may advance basic, behavioral, and social sciences research, as well as reveal innovative and practical avenues for addressing early mortality in people with a diagnosis of an SMI. The following objectives are presented in order of priority, including: (1) improve the empirical understanding of the direct and indirect social and biological contributions of trauma on early mortality; (2) advance the role of family support, extended families, and informal support; (3) redefine clinical education and support clinicians with technological advancements to improve diagnostic accuracy; (4) recognition of the importance co-occurring disorders and early mortality; (5) advance the science of pharmaceuticals, drug discovery, and choice in medication use; (6) look beyond social determinants of health and examine outcomes meaningful to people with a diagnosis of an SMI as mechanisms of early mortality; (7) precision medicine can support personalize treatment; and (8) redefine system literacy and health literacy.

Presenter(s) Bio: Dr. Fortuna is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth College and Co-Founder of the Collaborative Design for Recovery and Health. As an international collaborative of patients, peer support specialists, caregivers, policymakers and payer systems, the Collaborative uses community-based participatory research to facilitate the development, evaluation, and implementation of digital tools that leverage mobile health to address needs identified by community members from vulnerable populations (collabrh.org).
